Build a trust-focused improvement for Terminal used by subscription businesses

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Stripe is financial infrastructure for internet businesses; its products include payments, Checkout, Billing, Connect, Radar, Issuing, Terminal, and tax tools.

Stripe Terminal lets businesses accept in-person payments through card readers and point-of-sale integrations. For subscription businesses—such as gyms, wellness studios, coworking spaces, classes, clubs, rentals, and service providers—the in-person payment moment is often also the moment when a customer is asked to start, renew, pause, upgrade, or reauthorize a recurring relationship.

The core challenge is trust. Customers may worry about what they are agreeing to, how much they will be charged later, whether their payment method will be stored securely, how cancellation works, and whether staff can be trusted with sensitive payment details. Merchants, meanwhile, need a smooth checkout flow that supports conversion, reduces disputes, avoids accidental mis-billing, and works reliably across front-desk staff, kiosks, mobile readers, and integrated billing systems.

Design a trust-focused improvement for Stripe Terminal that helps subscription businesses create a clearer, safer, and more confidence-building in-person payment experience. The scope should stay anchored in Terminal and the subscription signup or recurring-payment workflow, while considering Stripe’s broader strengths in payments infrastructure, billing, fraud prevention, developer experience, and compliance.

The experience should consider:

- The primary users involved: end customers, front-desk or sales staff, business owners, developers/integrators, and support teams.

- The in-person workflow from plan selection or membership setup through payment authorization, receipt, future billing, and issue resolution.

- Moments where trust can break down, such as unclear recurring terms, stored payment consent, failed renewals, refunds, disputes, or staff handling sensitive information.

- Constraints of physical checkout environments, including speed, device screen size, connectivity, accessibility, staff training, and customer pressure at the point of sale.

- How the experience should work with subscription systems, CRM/POS tools, customer identity, receipts, notifications, and payment method storage.

- Trust, safety, and compliance expectations around consent, transparency, authentication, privacy, fraud, and regional payment rules.

- Success signals for both customers and merchants, such as confidence, fewer billing misunderstandings, lower dispute rates, higher completed signups, and fewer support contacts.

Your goal is to define the user problem clearly, identify the highest-friction trust moments, and propose a product experience that improves confidence in subscription payments made through Stripe Terminal without unnecessarily slowing down legitimate in-person commerce.
