Problem Statement Description
Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.
Amazon Prime members already receive a broad set of benefits across shopping, delivery, deals, returns, subscriptions, and digital services. The design challenge is to improve the Amazon Shopping experience for these members in a way that makes Prime feel more useful, easier to navigate, and more valuable during everyday purchase journeys.
Focus on the Prime member’s end-to-end shopping workflow: opening Amazon with an intent or need, discovering relevant products, evaluating options, understanding Prime-specific benefits, choosing delivery or pickup options, managing repeat purchases, tracking orders, handling returns, and recognizing the ongoing value of membership. Consider both high-frequency shoppers and members who may not fully understand or use all Prime benefits.
The current experience may include friction such as overwhelming choice, unclear differentiation between Prime and non-Prime offers, inconsistent delivery expectations, difficulty finding the best value, fragmented benefit discovery, and limited personalization across household, recurring, or time-sensitive shopping needs. The task is to define what “better” should mean for Prime members and what product experience Amazon Shopping should support.
The experience should consider:
- Which Prime member segment or shopping moment you are prioritizing and why
- How members discover products, compare options, and make confident purchase decisions
- How Prime benefits such as fast delivery, exclusive deals, subscriptions, returns, and convenience are surfaced without adding clutter
- How the experience handles urgency, repeat purchases, household needs, gifting, or deal-seeking behavior
- Trust factors such as delivery promise accuracy, product quality signals, price confidence, reviews, and return expectations
- Personalization opportunities while respecting user control, privacy, and transparency
- Cross-surface consistency across mobile app, web, Alexa/devices, notifications, and post-purchase flows
- How success would be evaluated for members, the shopping marketplace, and Amazon’s long-term Prime value
The goal is to frame a product design approach that improves the Prime shopping journey, reduces meaningful friction, strengthens perceived membership value, and aligns with Amazon’s customer obsession, selection, convenience, and operational excellence.
