Design a new feature in Marketplace that helps families achieve better outcomes

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.

Amazon Marketplace serves families who make frequent, high-stakes, and often time-sensitive purchase decisions across household essentials, school needs, healthcare-adjacent products, baby and child items, groceries, devices, media, and services. In this interview, you are asked to design a new Marketplace feature that helps families achieve “better outcomes,” not just complete more transactions.

Assume the target users include multi-person households with shared budgets, recurring needs, different ages and preferences, and varying levels of trust in online shopping. Their current journey may involve discovering what to buy, comparing options, coordinating with other family members, managing subscriptions or repeat purchases, controlling spend, ensuring safety and appropriateness, and resolving delivery or return issues.

The feature should fit within Amazon’s Marketplace experience and respect Amazon’s strengths in selection, convenience, logistics, personalization, trust, and operational scale. You should think beyond a single shopping widget and consider how the experience would work across discovery, decision-making, purchase, fulfillment, post-purchase support, and repeat usage.

The experience should consider:

- Which family segment you are designing for and what “better outcomes” means for them

- The core family workflow, including planning, coordination, purchase, delivery, use, and replenishment

- Pain points around trust, safety, affordability, time savings, shared decision-making, and product fit

- How the feature would integrate into Marketplace without adding unnecessary complexity

- How parents, caregivers, children, or other household members may have different needs and permissions

- What data, personalization, recommendations, or operational capabilities may be needed

- Risks such as over-personalization, privacy concerns, inappropriate recommendations, affordability pressure, or seller abuse

- How success would be evaluated through customer value, business value, and long-term retention

Your goal is to frame the opportunity, identify the most important user problem, define the intended experience, and explain how the feature could create meaningful value for families while remaining scalable and trustworthy within Amazon Marketplace.
