Problem Statement Description
Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.
Amazon wants to rethink the mobile experience of Alexa for small merchants—owners and operators of local shops, home-based sellers, service providers, and small ecommerce businesses who often manage sales, inventory, customer questions, fulfillment, and marketing from their phones. These merchants may already use Amazon, Alexa-enabled devices, or third-party tools, but their day-to-day workflow is fragmented, time-constrained, and highly operational.
Your task is to explore how Alexa’s mobile experience could better support small merchants in running and growing their businesses. Consider moments where voice, automation, reminders, insights, and integrations could reduce manual effort, improve responsiveness, or help merchants make better decisions while they are away from a desk.
This is a product design question, so focus on understanding the merchant workflow, identifying meaningful pain points, defining the target user segment, and shaping a mobile-first Alexa experience that fits Amazon’s ecosystem without assuming unlimited engineering or business scope.
The experience should consider:
- The specific type of small merchant you are designing for and their daily operating context.
- Mobile workflow friction across tasks such as inventory checks, order updates, customer communication, promotions, bookkeeping, and fulfillment.
- Where Alexa’s voice, conversational, proactive, or automation capabilities create unique value versus a standard merchant dashboard.
- How the experience might connect with Amazon services, commerce tools, logistics capabilities, or third-party merchant platforms.
- Trust, accuracy, permissions, privacy, and merchant control when Alexa accesses business data or takes actions.
- Accessibility for merchants with limited time, limited technical sophistication, or multilingual needs.
- Success indicators that would show the redesigned experience is useful, reliable, and worth repeated use.
The goal is to define a clear, merchant-centered redesign direction for Alexa on mobile that addresses real operational pain points, creates differentiated value for small businesses, and fits plausibly within Amazon’s broader strengths in commerce, logistics, devices, and cloud infrastructure.
