QuestionsProduct DesignAmazon

Design a better AWS experience for Prime members

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS. AWS is Amazon's cloud platform; its products include compute, storage, databases, analytics, networking, security, machine learning, and developer tools.

Amazon Prime members have a deep relationship with Amazon as consumers, but AWS is often perceived as technical, enterprise-oriented, and intimidating. This question asks you to design a better AWS experience for Prime members: people who may be students, creators, families, side-hustle builders, small business owners, smart-home enthusiasts, or curious learners, but who do not necessarily identify as cloud professionals.

Focus on the end-to-end product experience for a Prime member discovering, understanding, trying, and safely using AWS. Consider the friction created by cloud jargon, account setup, service selection, billing uncertainty, security configuration, lack of clear consumer-relevant use cases, and the gap between Amazon’s familiar retail/Prime experience and AWS’s developer-centric workflows.

Your scope is not to simply bundle AWS into Prime or discount cloud usage. Define the user problem, choose a meaningful Prime member segment, and design an experience that helps them achieve a valuable outcome while preserving AWS’s trust, reliability, privacy, and operational standards.

The experience should consider:

- Which Prime member segment you are designing for and why their needs are meaningfully different from existing AWS users

- The specific user journey from awareness to activation, first successful use, ongoing usage, and support

- How users understand what AWS can do for them without needing deep cloud knowledge upfront

- How onboarding, identity, billing, permissions, and safety controls should work for a consumer-adjacent audience

- How the experience handles cost transparency, usage limits, security risks, and fear of making mistakes

- How the design fits within Amazon’s broader ecosystem without confusing Prime’s core value proposition

- What trade-offs exist between simplicity for Prime members and the power, flexibility, and professional expectations of AWS

The goal is to propose a product experience that makes AWS more approachable and valuable for a clearly defined Prime member use case, while demonstrating strong product judgment around user needs, workflow friction, ecosystem fit, and responsible cloud adoption.
