Redesign the mobile experience of Alexa for small merchants

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.

Amazon Alexa is widely associated with voice assistance in the home, but small merchants also operate in environments where hands-free, fast, and low-friction interactions can be valuable. These merchants may be store owners, restaurant operators, local service providers, market sellers, or small e-commerce sellers who juggle inventory, customer requests, fulfillment, staff coordination, payments, and marketing with limited time and tools.

Your task is to redesign the mobile experience of Alexa for small merchants. Focus on how a merchant would use Alexa from a phone during their daily business workflow, not just as a consumer voice assistant. Consider what jobs Alexa should help them accomplish, where mobile interaction is more appropriate than a smart speaker, and how the experience should fit into Amazon’s broader strengths in commerce, logistics, devices, and cloud services.

The design should be grounded in merchant pain points and operational realities: noisy environments, multitasking, low technical sophistication, limited staff, urgency, trust, and the need for clear business outcomes. You should define the target merchant segment, identify the highest-value workflows, and describe the product experience without jumping directly to a feature list.

The experience should consider:

- The specific type of small merchant you are designing for and their day-to-day workflow

- Key moments where voice, mobile UI, notifications, or automation reduce friction

- Merchant tasks such as inventory checks, order updates, customer messages, reminders, promotions, replenishment, or staff coordination

- Trust, accuracy, confirmation, and error recovery for business-critical actions

- Integration points with Amazon services or third-party merchant tools

- Accessibility, language, noise, and low-bandwidth constraints in real merchant environments

- Onboarding and habit formation for merchants who may not currently think of Alexa as a business tool

- Success indicators that would show the redesigned experience is useful and adopted

The goal is to define a focused, merchant-centered mobile Alexa experience that creates practical business value, fits Amazon’s ecosystem, and makes daily operations easier for small merchants without overcomplicating their workflow.
