Design a better Music experience for free listeners

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Spotify is an audio streaming company; its products include music, podcasts, audiobooks, playlists, recommendations, creator tools, subscriptions, and ads.

Spotify’s free music experience serves a broad global audience: casual listeners, students, price-sensitive users, people in emerging markets, and listeners who are still deciding whether Spotify is worth paying for. These users want fast access to music they like, discovery of new artists, control over their listening, and a tolerable ad-supported experience, while Spotify must balance engagement, monetization, creator value, and conversion to Premium.

Design a better music experience for free listeners on Spotify. Focus on the end-to-end listening workflow: opening the app, choosing what to play, navigating limits such as ads or playback restrictions, discovering new music, saving or sharing content, and deciding whether to return or upgrade. Consider how this experience differs from Premium without simply removing all paid features or undermining Spotify’s subscription business.

The solution space may include mobile and desktop surfaces, personalization, playlists, search, recommendations, social discovery, ad experience, onboarding, creator/artist interactions, or lightweight monetization mechanics. You should define which free-listener segment you are prioritizing, what pain point matters most, and how the proposed experience improves both user value and Spotify’s business outcomes.

The experience should consider:

- Key free-listener personas, such as new users, casual listeners, heavy ad-supported listeners, students, or users in lower-income markets.

- Moments of friction in the free workflow, including music selection, shuffle/control limitations, ad interruptions, discovery fatigue, repeat listening, and playlist management.

- The balance between free-user satisfaction, ad revenue, Premium conversion, and avoiding cannibalization of paid subscriptions.

- Spotify’s strengths in personalization, playlists, creator ecosystem, social listening, and cross-format audio discovery.

- Competitive expectations set by YouTube Music, TikTok, Apple Music, Amazon Music, radio-like services, and short-form discovery platforms.

- Constraints such as music licensing, ad load, mobile data usage, regional differences, device limitations, and privacy expectations.

- Success measures such as engagement, retention, listening hours, ad monetization, playlist saves, artist discovery, user satisfaction, and upgrade intent.

Your goal is to frame a clear user problem, identify the highest-impact opportunity within Spotify’s free music experience, and design a product experience that meaningfully improves free listening while supporting Spotify’s broader growth, monetization, and creator ecosystem objectives.
