Problem Statement Description
Product context: Google is a consumer technology, ads, AI, and cloud company; its products include Search, YouTube, Android, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Google Play, Workspace, and Google Cloud.
Google Search is often the first gateway to the internet, but new internet users may not search the way experienced users do. They may be unfamiliar with query formulation, browser conventions, result ranking, ads, source credibility, language settings, voice input, or how to refine a search when the first result is not useful. Many may also be coming online through mobile-first, low-bandwidth, shared-device, multilingual, or voice-led environments.
Your task is to design a better Search experience for these new internet users. Focus on the end-to-end workflow: recognizing an information need, expressing it to Google, understanding results, judging trustworthiness, refining the query, and completing the intended task. Consider how Google can preserve Search’s core strengths—speed, relevance, breadth, and information quality—while making the experience more approachable for people with limited digital literacy.
This is a product design question, so the emphasis is not on producing a single feature immediately. You should clarify the target user segment, identify the most important pain points, define the user journey, and propose an experience that helps users succeed safely and confidently.
The experience should consider:
- Who “new internet users” are, including device type, language, literacy, geography, connectivity, and confidence level
- The specific jobs they come to Search to accomplish, such as learning, local discovery, health, government services, commerce, or troubleshooting
- Friction in query input, including spelling, language mixing, voice, visual search, and uncertainty about what to ask
- Friction in interpreting results, including ads, snippets, source credibility, misinformation, and overwhelming choice
- How the product can teach search behavior without feeling patronizing or slowing expert users down
- Accessibility, privacy, safety, and responsible AI considerations, especially for vulnerable or low-literacy users
- Success metrics that reflect user understanding, task completion, trust, retention, and reduced failed searches
- Constraints of Google-scale Search, including latency, localization, abuse prevention, and maintaining result quality
The goal is to describe a coherent Search experience that makes the internet more usable for first-time or low-confidence users while staying aligned with Google’s mission to organize information and make it universally accessible and useful.
