Improve onboarding in YouTube for commuters

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Google is a consumer technology, ads, AI, and cloud company; its products include Search, YouTube, Android, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Google Play, Workspace, and Google Cloud. YouTube is Google's video platform; its products include long-form video, Shorts, live streaming, subscriptions, YouTube Music, creator monetization, recommendations, and ads.

You are designing improvements to the onboarding experience in YouTube specifically for commuters: people using YouTube during daily travel on public transit, rideshares, walking, cycling pauses, or as passengers in cars. These users often have short, fragmented sessions, variable connectivity, limited attention, noisy environments, battery constraints, and changing preferences depending on whether they are watching, listening, or saving content for later.

Focus on the early user journey: how YouTube understands a commuter’s context, helps them quickly get to useful content, and sets up preferences without creating friction. The onboarding may apply to new users, returning users on a new device, or existing users encountering a commute-focused experience for the first time.

Your task is to frame the user problem, identify commuter-specific needs and pain points, and design a product experience that fits within YouTube’s broader ecosystem while respecting privacy, personalization quality, accessibility, and trust.

The experience should consider:

- The commuter workflow before, during, and after travel, including session length, device state, and connectivity.

- Different commuter modes, such as public transit, walking, rideshare, driving as a passenger, or audio-only listening.

- How onboarding captures preferences without feeling intrusive or requiring too many steps.

- Discovery of relevant formats, such as Shorts, long-form videos, playlists, podcasts, music, news, learning, or offline content.

- Constraints around safety, attention, sound availability, captions, battery, data usage, and network reliability.

- Personalization signals, privacy controls, and how much user intent should be explicitly requested versus inferred.

- How the experience integrates with existing YouTube surfaces such as Home, subscriptions, downloads, notifications, and watch history.

- Success indicators for whether commuters find the onboarding useful and continue using YouTube during travel.

The goal is to design a commuter-aware onboarding experience that helps users get to the right content quickly, with minimal cognitive load, while strengthening YouTube’s value as a trusted, personalized, and convenient companion during daily travel.
