Design a better Search experience for new internet users

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Google is a consumer technology, ads, AI, and cloud company; its products include Search, YouTube, Android, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Google Play, Workspace, and Google Cloud.

Google Search is often the first gateway to the internet for people who are newly coming online. These users may have limited digital literacy, intermittent connectivity, shared or low-end devices, low confidence typing queries, unfamiliarity with search result pages, language or literacy barriers, and high sensitivity to trust, safety, and cost of data usage.

Your task is to design a better Search experience for new internet users. Focus on the end-to-end user journey: recognizing a need for information, expressing that need, understanding results, evaluating credibility, completing the next action, and building confidence to return. The solution should fit Google’s role as a trusted information product at global scale, while accounting for diverse languages, cultures, devices, and connectivity conditions.

This is a product design interview question. You are expected to define the target user segment clearly, identify the highest-friction moments in their current search workflow, prioritize needs, and propose an experience that improves access to useful information without compromising quality, privacy, or user trust.

The experience should consider:

- Who “new internet users” are, including differences by age, literacy, language, geography, device access, and digital confidence

- The situations that trigger a search, such as health, education, jobs, government services, local commerce, entertainment, or troubleshooting

- Input challenges, including spelling, typing, voice, local languages, visual search, and uncertainty about how to phrase a query

- Result comprehension challenges, including ads, snippets, source credibility, misinformation, scams, and next-step clarity

- Constraints such as low bandwidth, expensive data, unreliable connectivity, older phones, shared devices, and privacy expectations

- How the experience can teach, guide, or reassure users without making Search feel complicated or patronizing

- How personalization, AI assistance, ecosystem integrations, and safety features should be balanced with transparency and user control

- How success would be evaluated across activation, successful task completion, trust, retention, information quality, and user safety

The goal is to design a Search experience that helps new internet users confidently find, understand, and act on information, while preserving Google Search’s core strengths in relevance, reliability, speed, and trust.
