Problem Statement Description
Product context: Google is a consumer technology, ads, AI, and cloud company; its products include Search, YouTube, Android, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Google Play, Workspace, and Google Cloud. Gmail is Google's email product; its products and surfaces include inbox, search, labels, spam protection, attachments, smart compose, and Workspace integrations.
Gmail is a daily communication hub for many developers, but their email workflow is often very different from a general consumer’s. Developers may receive high-volume, time-sensitive messages from code review tools, GitHub/GitLab, CI/CD systems, monitoring alerts, incident channels, security notifications, calendar invites, product discussions, and internal mailing lists. On mobile, these messages can be difficult to scan, prioritize, and act on quickly.
Redesign the Gmail mobile experience specifically for developers. Focus on the moments when a developer is away from their laptop but still needs to understand what matters, decide whether to respond, and take the next appropriate action without being overwhelmed by noisy notifications or long technical threads.
Your scope should be the Gmail mobile product experience, not a complete redesign of every developer tool. Consider how Gmail fits into Google’s broader ecosystem, enterprise expectations, privacy standards, and global-scale reliability requirements.
The experience should consider:
- The core developer personas and contexts, such as individual contributors, tech leads, on-call engineers, and open-source maintainers.
- The most important mobile workflows, including triaging technical email, finding context in long threads, handling urgent alerts, and following up later from desktop.
- Pain points created by high-volume automated email, duplicated notifications, unclear urgency, and dense technical content on small screens.
- How developers distinguish between informational updates, action-required messages, security issues, and production incidents.
- What actions Gmail should support directly on mobile versus what should be deferred or handed off to another tool.
- Privacy, security, and enterprise constraints around reading, classifying, summarizing, or integrating developer-related content.
- How the experience remains useful for developers without making Gmail confusing for mainstream users.
- How success could be evaluated through user behavior, satisfaction, and quality of prioritization without encouraging notification overload.
The goal is to define a focused mobile Gmail experience that helps developers stay informed and responsive while preserving attention, trust, and control.
