Improve onboarding in Ad-supported Plan for binge watchers

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.

You are designing improvements to the onboarding experience for Netflix’s Ad-supported Plan, specifically for users who tend to binge-watch series or long-form content in extended viewing sessions. These users may be price-sensitive enough to choose an ad-supported tier, but they also have high expectations around uninterrupted immersion, content discovery, personalization, and streaming quality.

The current onboarding flow should be treated as the moment when a new or returning subscriber understands what the Ad-supported Plan offers, sets up their viewing preferences, and forms expectations about ads, available content, profiles, devices, and recommendations. Your task is to identify the key frictions binge watchers may face during this transition and define what the onboarding product experience should support.

Consider Netflix’s broader context: a global entertainment service competing with subscription video platforms, free ad-supported content, short-form entertainment, and local broadcasters. The design should account for different markets, household viewing patterns, multiple profiles, language preferences, device usage, and the need to balance monetization with retention.

The experience should consider:

- The end-to-end onboarding journey from plan selection through first successful binge session.

- Binge watcher needs such as continuity, season discovery, “next episode” confidence, and managing ad expectations.

- How users understand ad load, ad placement, content availability, downloads, device limits, and plan trade-offs.

- Personalization inputs that help Netflix recommend series, genres, languages, and viewing modes quickly.

- Household and profile setup for shared accounts where different members may have different tolerance for ads.

- Global localization needs, including language, regional catalogs, payment norms, and device constraints.

- Moments where confusion or disappointment could lead to abandonment, downgrade regret, or early churn.

- How the onboarding experience can build trust without over-explaining or slowing users down.

Your goal is to frame the user problem clearly, prioritize the most important onboarding pain points for binge watchers on the Ad-supported Plan, and describe a product experience that helps them feel confident, informed, and ready to start watching.
