Problem Statement Description
Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.
Design a trust-focused improvement for Netflix Kids Profiles aimed at households that previously subscribed to Netflix but have since lapsed. The primary users are caregivers deciding whether Netflix still feels safe, age-appropriate, and worth returning to for their children, while the child’s experience must remain simple, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.
Focus on the end-to-end experience around Kids Profiles: how a returning or considering-to-return parent understands what their child can watch, how controls and recommendations feel trustworthy, and how the product reassures them that Netflix is a reliable entertainment environment compared with alternatives like Disney+, YouTube, local broadcasters, and other streaming services.
This is a product design question, not a growth-hack question. The improvement should be rooted in user needs, trust barriers, family workflows, and Netflix’s broader context of global content, personalization, streaming quality, ads, games, and live content. You should define the target user segment clearly and decide which part of the lapsed-subscriber journey you are designing for.
The experience should consider:
- The caregiver workflow before, during, and after reactivating or reconsidering Netflix for a child.
- Trust pain points such as content appropriateness, recommendation confidence, screen-time concerns, ads or promotional exposure, account controls, and child autonomy.
- Differences across child age ranges, household norms, regions, languages, and device types.
- How Kids Profiles discovery, parental controls, content ratings, viewing history, and personalization currently create or reduce confidence.
- How to support both parent decision-making and child enjoyment without making the experience feel overly restrictive.
- What success would look like for lapsed households, including renewed confidence, engagement with Kids Profiles, and reduced reasons to churn again.
- Constraints around privacy, child safety, localization, content availability, and maintaining a high-quality entertainment experience.
Your goal is to frame a clear user problem, identify the most important trust gap for lapsed Netflix households with children, and design a product experience that makes caregivers feel confident returning to and continuing with Kids Profiles.
