Problem Statement Description
Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.
Netflix is expanding beyond on-demand entertainment into live events, where families may want to watch premieres, sports-adjacent specials, talent competitions, fan events, comedy, kids programming, or cultural moments together in real time. Unlike a typical movie night, live viewing has fixed timing, higher expectations for reliability, more coordination across household members, and less tolerance for confusion when an event is about to start.
Design a better Live Events experience for families at global scale. Consider a household with adults, teens, and younger children using different profiles, devices, languages, bandwidth conditions, and parental controls. The experience should help families discover relevant live events, decide whether the event is appropriate, coordinate viewing, join at the right moment, and recover gracefully if they miss the start or encounter streaming issues.
This is a product design question, so focus on the user problem, the end-to-end workflow, and the product experience Netflix should support. Avoid jumping directly to features; first clarify which family users you are prioritizing, what moments in the live-event journey matter most, and what makes this different from Netflix’s existing on-demand experience.
The experience should consider:
- How families discover upcoming live events across profiles, home screens, search, notifications, and kids-safe surfaces
- How parents assess age-appropriateness, language, duration, start time, spoilers, and household fit
- How the product supports planning across time zones, school nights, shared TVs, mobile devices, and multiple family members
- How users join live, resume from the beginning, catch up, or watch after the event without feeling punished for missing the start
- How personalization should work when one event may appeal to the whole household but individual profiles have different tastes and restrictions
- How global localization, accessibility, subtitles, dubbing, cultural relevance, and regional availability shape the experience
- How to handle high-stakes live reliability concerns such as buffering, latency, device compatibility, and clear communication during issues
Your goal is to define a compelling family-centered Live Events experience that strengthens Netflix’s role as a shared entertainment destination while respecting global scale, safety, personalization, and streaming-quality expectations.
