Redesign the mobile experience of Recommendations for mobile-first viewers

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.

Netflix wants to improve the mobile recommendations experience for viewers who primarily discover and watch entertainment on their phones. These users may be browsing during short breaks, commuting, multitasking, using limited bandwidth, sharing devices, or switching between long-form video, short previews, games, live content, and ad-supported plans.

The current challenge is not simply to show “better titles,” but to make discovery feel fast, relevant, low-effort, and confidence-building on a small screen. Mobile-first viewers need to decide what to watch with limited attention, limited screen space, and often limited patience for long browsing sessions.

Design a redesigned recommendations experience for Netflix mobile that helps these viewers find something worth watching while supporting Netflix’s broader goals around personalization, retention, content discovery, localization, and streaming quality. Consider how the experience should work across different markets, content types, viewing contexts, and user intent levels without assuming a single universal browsing behavior.

The experience should consider:

- The end-to-end mobile discovery workflow, from opening the app to choosing, saving, previewing, or abandoning a title

- Key pain points such as choice overload, repetitive rows, unclear relevance, weak previews, language mismatch, or slow decision-making

- How recommendations should adapt to mobile-first behaviors like short sessions, vertical scrolling, partial attention, and on-the-go usage

- How to support different intent modes, such as “I know what I want,” “show me something quick,” “help me pick,” or “continue something”

- The role of personalization signals, viewing history, thumbs/ratings, search, trends, social context, and local content preferences

- How the design handles movies, series, live events, games, trailers, downloads, and ad-supported viewing experiences

- Constraints around screen real estate, performance, accessibility, localization, privacy, and network quality

- How success could be reflected in user satisfaction, faster discovery, higher engagement, better retention, and reduced browsing abandonment

Your goal is to frame a clear user-centered redesign opportunity, define the target mobile-first viewer and their discovery needs, and describe the product experience Netflix should support without jumping directly to a final feature list.
