Problem Statement Description
Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.
Netflix’s ad-supported plan offers a lower-priced entry point, but binge watchers have distinct expectations: they want to get into a long viewing session quickly, trust that ads will not break immersion unpredictably, discover series worth committing to, and feel the plan still delivers a premium Netflix experience. The onboarding journey is the first opportunity to set expectations, personalize recommendations, explain ad-related differences, and reduce early churn risk.
Design an improved onboarding experience for binge watchers joining Netflix’s ad-supported plan at global scale. Consider users across different countries, languages, devices, connectivity conditions, content preferences, and familiarity with ad-supported streaming. The experience should account for competitive alternatives such as YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video, TikTok, local broadcasters, and other entertainment options that shape user expectations around ads, personalization, and session continuity.
Focus on the user workflow from sign-up or plan selection through first-session setup, content discovery, first playback, ad-experience expectation setting, and early repeat engagement. Do not assume unlimited engineering, content, or advertising flexibility; the design should work within a global subscription streaming business where retention, personalization, streaming quality, ad monetization, and localization all matter.
The experience should consider:
- How binge watchers differ from casual viewers in onboarding needs, viewing intent, session length, and tolerance for interruptions.
- What users need to understand about the ad-supported plan before and during their first viewing session without overwhelming them.
- How onboarding can help users find binge-worthy content quickly across regions, languages, genres, and content availability constraints.
- How to balance personalization signals, privacy expectations, and cold-start challenges for new or returning users.
- How the experience should adapt across TV, mobile, web, and shared-household contexts.
- How to set expectations around ads, content availability, downloads, streaming quality, and other plan-specific differences.
- How to support global localization while preserving a consistent Netflix brand experience.
- What friction points could cause abandonment, dissatisfaction, or early plan switching during the first few days.
The goal is to define a thoughtful product experience that improves onboarding for binge watchers on Netflix’s ad-supported plan, helping them quickly understand the value of the plan, start a satisfying viewing session, and build confidence that Netflix can support their long-form entertainment habits despite the presence of ads.
