Design a new feature in Games that helps ad-supported users achieve better outcomes at global scale

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.

Netflix is exploring how Games can create more value for members on the ad-supported plan across global markets. These users may have different motivations, device constraints, price sensitivity, tolerance for ads, and familiarity with Netflix Games compared with premium subscribers. The challenge is to design a new feature that helps them achieve better outcomes while fitting naturally into the Netflix entertainment experience.

Consider the end-to-end user journey: discovering that games exist, understanding why a game is worth trying, starting gameplay with minimal friction, returning over time, and balancing entertainment with an ad-supported subscription model. The feature should account for global scale, including localization, bandwidth variability, device diversity, regional content preferences, age/family contexts, and different attitudes toward gaming and advertising.

This is a product design problem, not just an idea-generation exercise. You should define the target user segment clearly, identify the most important pain point or opportunity, and design an experience that improves user value while supporting Netflix’s broader goals around engagement, retention, personalization, and sustainable monetization.

The experience should consider:

- Which ad-supported users you are designing for and what “better outcomes” means for them

- Where Games fits in the Netflix app journey across TV, mobile, and other surfaces

- Discovery, onboarding, and activation friction for users who may not identify as gamers

- How ads, rewards, or subscription-plan constraints might affect the experience without harming trust

- Personalization and recommendations across countries, languages, genres, and household contexts

- Accessibility, low-bandwidth usage, device limitations, and regional availability

- Success metrics such as game starts, repeat engagement, retention, satisfaction, and ad-plan value

- Risks around cannibalizing viewing time, overwhelming the core streaming experience, or creating unfair incentives

Your goal is to propose a thoughtful, globally scalable feature concept for Netflix Games that improves the ad-supported user experience, explain the user problem it solves, and describe how the product would work at a level of detail appropriate for a senior product design interview.
