Problem Statement Description
Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.
Netflix Mobile Downloads helps members watch content when connectivity is unreliable, expensive, or unavailable, such as during commutes, flights, travel, or low-bandwidth moments. For binge watchers, the workflow is more demanding: they often want multiple episodes ready in sequence, expect continuity across devices, and may only realize a download gap when they are already offline.
Your task is to improve the onboarding experience for binge watchers using Mobile Downloads. Focus on how a member first discovers, understands, sets up, and trusts downloads as part of their viewing routine without making the experience feel complex or intrusive.
Consider the end-to-end user journey from browsing or continuing a series, deciding what to download, managing storage and network constraints, and returning to watch later. The design should fit Netflix’s global audience, personalized content experience, and expectation of low-friction entertainment.
The experience should consider:
- How binge watchers discover Mobile Downloads at the right moment in their viewing journey
- What first-time users need to understand about download availability, storage, Wi-Fi usage, expiration, and device limits
- How onboarding can support episodic viewing patterns, season-level intent, and “next episode” continuity
- Differences across markets, devices, network quality, data costs, languages, and content rights
- How to reduce anxiety around whether content will be available offline when needed
- How onboarding interacts with personalization, recommendations, and content discovery
- What friction could cause users to abandon setup or ignore the feature
- How success might be reflected in engagement, retention, viewing completion, and user confidence
The goal is to frame a product design approach that improves first-time and early repeat usage of Mobile Downloads for binge watchers while preserving the simplicity, trust, and personalized feel expected from Netflix.
