Design a better Netflix experience for families

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.

Design a better Netflix experience for families who share one subscription across adults, teens, and children, often with different tastes, schedules, maturity needs, languages, and devices. Consider the full family entertainment workflow: choosing what to watch together, managing individual preferences, keeping kids in age-appropriate experiences, resuming content across devices, and reducing conflict or decision fatigue during shared viewing moments.

Families may use Netflix in many contexts: weekday solo viewing, weekend movie nights, children watching on tablets, parents browsing after bedtime, travel, multilingual households, or households with limited bandwidth. The current experience must balance personalization with shared use, entertainment discovery with parental confidence, and simplicity with enough control for different family members.

Your task is to define the user problems, identify the most important family segments and use cases, and design an improved product experience that fits Netflix’s global streaming context. Focus on the product experience and trade-offs rather than content acquisition strategy.

The experience should consider:

- How different family members discover, choose, and resume content across profiles and devices

- Friction in shared decision-making, such as “what should we watch together?”

- Age-appropriate viewing, parental controls, trust, and child independence

- Personalization challenges when multiple people watch from the same account or device

- Global needs such as language, localization, accessibility, and varied household structures

- Netflix business goals such as engagement, retention, satisfaction, and content discovery

- Constraints around simplicity, privacy, recommendations quality, and avoiding over-complexity

The goal is to propose a clear, user-centered family experience for Netflix, including the primary user problem, target users, key product flows, success indicators, and major trade-offs you would evaluate before launch.
