Design a better Netflix experience for families

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.

Netflix wants to improve the experience for families who share a subscription across adults, children, teens, and sometimes multiple households or caregivers. Today, family viewing can involve competing needs: parents want control, safety, and convenience; kids want age-appropriate discovery and autonomy; teens may want privacy and personalization; and the household as a whole may want easy co-viewing, shared rituals, and fewer conflicts over what to watch.

Design a better Netflix experience for families in the context of a global entertainment product that includes series, films, kids content, live events, games, ads-supported plans, and localized catalogs. Consider the full journey: account setup, profile creation, parental controls, content discovery, deciding what to watch together, managing screen time or maturity levels, switching between individual and shared viewing, and maintaining recommendations that work for both solo and group use.

Your proposal should focus on the product experience and user workflow friction rather than only adding more content. You may define a specific family segment or use case if helpful, but make clear who you are designing for, what problem you are prioritizing, and how the experience would fit within Netflix’s existing subscription, personalization, and cross-device ecosystem.

The experience should consider:

- Different family roles, including parents, young children, teens, grandparents, and shared caregivers

- Moments of friction such as profile misuse, unsafe discovery, poor recommendations, decision fatigue, and conflicts over viewing choices

- Co-viewing scenarios versus individual viewing across TV, mobile, tablet, and web

- Trust, safety, maturity ratings, parental control visibility, and child autonomy

- Personalization challenges when multiple people watch together or use the same profile

- Global differences in household structure, language, culture, catalog availability, and device access

- Business impact on engagement, retention, satisfaction, and plan value without harming the core Netflix experience

The goal is to define a clear family-centered product opportunity for Netflix, explain why it matters, and outline an experience that meaningfully improves how families discover, choose, manage, and enjoy entertainment together.
