Redesign the mobile experience of Slack for CIOs

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Salesforce is an enterprise CRM and cloud software company; its products include Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Commerce Cloud, Data Cloud, Einstein AI, Tableau, and Slack. Slack is Salesforce's workplace collaboration product; its products include channels, DMs, huddles, workflow automation, search, app integrations, and enterprise administration.

Salesforce wants to understand how you would redesign Slack’s mobile experience for CIOs: senior technology executives who rely on Slack to stay informed, make decisions, monitor organizational risk, and coordinate with leadership teams while away from their desks. This is not a general redesign of Slack mobile for all employees; the focus is on CIO-specific workflows in large enterprises where Slack sits alongside Salesforce, CRM data, IT systems, governance tools, AI-enabled workflows, and enterprise collaboration platforms.

CIOs often operate in fragmented, high-interruption environments. On mobile, they may need to quickly understand urgent escalations, approve or delegate decisions, review business and technology health signals, communicate with executive peers, and maintain confidence that security, compliance, and data access are under control. The current mobile collaboration experience can become noisy, channel-heavy, and difficult to prioritize when every message, alert, app integration, and executive update competes for attention.

Your task is to frame the CIO’s mobile workflow, identify the most important pain points, and define what a redesigned Slack experience should support. Consider how the product can help CIOs separate signal from noise, move from awareness to action, and trust that sensitive enterprise information is handled appropriately—without simply adding more dashboards or notifications.

The experience should consider:

- The primary CIO jobs to be done on mobile, such as triaging critical issues, staying aligned with executives, monitoring enterprise operations, and approving time-sensitive actions.

- The difference between CIO needs and those of frontline employees, managers, IT admins, or general knowledge workers.

- How Slack mobile should handle prioritization, urgency, context, and executive-level summaries across channels, DMs, apps, and integrations.

- How Salesforce ecosystem strengths, such as CRM context, workflow automation, enterprise trust, extensibility, and governed AI, could influence the experience.

- Security, privacy, compliance, and access-control expectations for CIOs in regulated or large-enterprise environments.

- Mobile-specific constraints, including limited attention, small screen space, on-the-go usage, notification fatigue, and the need for fast decisions.

- How the experience would fit with existing enterprise tools such as Microsoft, ServiceNow, Oracle, Snowflake, Zendesk, or other operational systems.

- What success might look like for CIOs, their leadership teams, and the broader enterprise without prescribing a specific feature set upfront.

The goal is to define a focused, user-centered mobile Slack experience for CIOs that improves executive productivity, decision quality, and trust in enterprise collaboration while respecting the realities of complex organizations and high-stakes technology leadership.
