Problem Statement Description
Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads.
Marketplace sellers rely on Messenger to coordinate with potential buyers, answer questions, negotiate price, arrange pickup or delivery, and handle post-sale issues. Because these conversations often involve strangers, money, physical goods, and sometimes in-person meetups, trust is a core part of whether sellers feel safe and confident using the experience.
Design a trust-focused improvement for Messenger specifically for marketplace sellers. The problem should be approached from the seller’s workflow: receiving inquiries, identifying serious buyers, managing multiple conversations, avoiding scams or harassment, setting expectations, and completing a transaction without creating unnecessary friction for legitimate buyers.
Your scope is not to redesign all of Marketplace or all of Messenger. Focus on the Messenger experience where seller-buyer communication happens, and consider how Meta’s social graph, safety systems, messaging infrastructure, and large-scale marketplace behavior could support a better trust experience while preserving ease of use and reach.
The experience should consider:
- The key seller segments, such as casual sellers, high-volume resellers, local pickup sellers, shipped-goods sellers, or sellers of high-risk/high-value items
- The points in the seller journey where trust breaks down, from first message through negotiation, meetup, payment, and post-transaction follow-up
- What signals a seller needs to judge buyer credibility without exposing sensitive personal data or creating unfair bias
- How the product should handle scams, spam, harassment, no-shows, low-intent buyers, and suspicious payment behavior
- How to balance safety interventions with Messenger’s speed, simplicity, and conversational nature
- How the experience could work across mobile-first usage, multiple active chats, and repeat seller workflows
- What success would look like for sellers, buyers, Messenger, and Marketplace overall, including possible trade-offs or unintended consequences
The goal is to define a clear user problem, identify the highest-impact trust gap for marketplace sellers, and outline a product experience that makes seller-buyer conversations feel safer, more credible, and more manageable without unnecessarily reducing marketplace liquidity or message responsiveness.
