Problem Statement Description
Product context: LinkedIn is Microsoft's professional network; its products include profiles, feed, jobs, recruiting, LinkedIn Learning, sales tools, messaging, and ads.
LinkedIn Messaging is a core communication surface for job seekers as they discover roles, contact recruiters, follow up after applications, ask for referrals, coordinate interviews, and maintain professional relationships. At global scale, this experience must serve people across seniority levels, industries, languages, regions, employment statuses, and levels of familiarity with professional networking norms.
Today, job-seeker messaging can involve high-stakes, time-sensitive conversations mixed into a broader inbox that also contains sales outreach, networking messages, notifications, and low-relevance communication. Candidates may struggle to know whom to contact, what context to include, how to manage recruiter conversations, how to follow up appropriately, or how to distinguish meaningful hiring opportunities from noise or suspicious outreach.
Design a better Messaging experience for job seekers on LinkedIn. Focus on the end-to-end candidate workflow around employment-related conversations, including discovery, initiation, response management, trust, and follow-through. Consider how the experience should work for both active and passive job seekers while preserving LinkedIn’s professional identity, network effects, and trust standards.
The experience should consider:
- The key job-seeker segments and moments: active applicants, passive candidates, career switchers, students, laid-off workers, and senior professionals
- The main messaging workflows: recruiter outreach, referral requests, application follow-ups, interview coordination, networking, and opportunity evaluation
- Friction in the current inbox experience, including prioritization, relevance, message quality, response anxiety, spam, and missed opportunities
- Trust and safety expectations for professional hiring conversations, including authenticity, scams, privacy, and user control
- Global-scale needs such as language, cultural norms, labor-market differences, accessibility, and mobile-first usage
- How the experience fits with LinkedIn’s broader ecosystem, including profiles, jobs, notifications, connections, skills, and recruiter products
- Candidate and employer-side incentives, especially where improving one side of the marketplace could create trade-offs for the other
The goal is to define a product experience that helps job seekers communicate more effectively and confidently during their job search, while maintaining professional trust and improving the quality of hiring-related interactions across LinkedIn’s global network.
