Problem Statement Description
Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.
Tesla wants to improve the Model 3 experience for EV buyers, with a focus on the end-to-end journey from considering an electric vehicle to owning, charging, driving, and maintaining it. The challenge is to identify where prospective and current Model 3 buyers face friction, uncertainty, or unmet needs, and to design a product experience that better supports them.
This is a product design question, so the focus should be on users, workflows, pain points, and experience trade-offs rather than only listing new features. Consider the expectations of EV buyers who may be comparing Tesla against alternatives from Ford, BYD, GM, Rivian, or other mobility and charging ecosystems, while also accounting for Tesla’s strengths in hardware-software integration, connected services, safety, charging, and autonomy.
The experience should consider:
- Who the primary EV buyer segments are, such as first-time EV owners, commuters, families, tech-forward buyers, cost-conscious buyers, or sustainability-driven buyers
- The full buyer and owner workflow: research, configuration, purchase, delivery, onboarding, charging setup, daily driving, software updates, service, and resale
- Key anxieties or frictions, including range confidence, charging availability, battery health, total cost of ownership, insurance, safety, service access, and learning curve
- How the in-car interface, mobile app, charging network, delivery process, and support channels work together as one connected experience
- Differences between pre-purchase education, first 30 days of ownership, and long-term ownership needs
- Constraints around vehicle hardware, manufacturing complexity, regulatory requirements, safety, privacy, service operations, and charging infrastructure
- What would make the experience feel distinctly Tesla while still being simple, trustworthy, and accessible to mainstream EV buyers
The goal is to frame a clear user problem, define the most important moments in the Model 3 journey, and describe a better experience that improves buyer confidence, ownership satisfaction, and long-term engagement without jumping directly to a single feature idea.
