Problem Statement Description
Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.
Tesla owners interact with Service primarily through the mobile app, often without the dealership-style service model they may expect from prior car ownership. For first-time EV owners, service needs can feel unfamiliar: software updates, range or charging concerns, battery health questions, tire wear, diagnostics, mobile service, collision repair, recalls, and warranty coverage may all be experienced differently than with an internal-combustion vehicle.
Redesign the mobile Service experience for first-time EV owners at global scale. Focus on the end-to-end owner workflow from noticing a problem or concern, understanding whether action is needed, booking or resolving the issue, tracking progress, and feeling confident after completion. The experience should reflect Tesla’s connected-car capabilities, remote diagnostics, over-the-air software model, mobile service network, safety expectations, and operations across many countries, languages, regulations, vehicle models, and service capacity constraints.
This is a product design interview question. You should frame the user, identify the highest-friction moments, define the scope of the mobile experience, and explain what the product must support without jumping directly to a feature list.
The experience should consider:
- First-time EV owner anxieties around battery, charging, range, software updates, warnings, maintenance, and safety.
- The service journey across self-diagnosis, education, triage, appointment scheduling, mobile service, service center visits, repair status, payment, warranty, and follow-up.
- How the app uses vehicle telemetry, diagnostics, service history, location, and owner-reported symptoms while maintaining trust and privacy.
- Global differences in service availability, parts supply, road conditions, climate, language, regulation, and customer support expectations.
- Edge cases such as urgent safety issues, stranded drivers, failed charging, post-delivery defects, recalls, and repeat unresolved problems.
- Operational realities including technician capacity, appointment availability, parts readiness, remote fixes, and handoff between automated and human support.
- Success signals for both owners and Tesla, such as reduced confusion, faster resolution, fewer unnecessary appointments, higher trust, and improved service throughput.
Your goal is to define a mobile Service experience that makes first-time EV ownership feel understandable, safe, and supported while scaling across Tesla’s global fleet and service operations.
