Problem Statement Description
Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.
Tesla Insurance has an opportunity to better serve customers who participate in Tesla’s broader energy ecosystem, such as owners of EVs, home charging, Solar, Powerwall, or connected energy products. These customers may face risks and decisions that traditional insurance experiences do not handle well, including charging behavior, outage preparedness, battery health, home energy resilience, vehicle safety, and the financial impact of energy-related incidents.
Your task is to design a new Insurance feature that helps these energy customers achieve better outcomes. Focus on the customer problem, the end-to-end workflow, and how Tesla’s connected hardware, software, and energy data could support a differentiated insurance experience without assuming a particular solution upfront.
The experience should consider:
- Which energy customer segment you are designing for and what “better outcomes” means for them
- Key moments in the customer journey, such as onboarding, daily usage, risk prevention, incident handling, claims, or renewal
- Pain points caused by fragmented insurance, energy, vehicle, and home systems
- How Tesla’s ecosystem data could be used responsibly to personalize, prevent, or simplify insurance experiences
- Trust, privacy, transparency, and customer control around sensitive vehicle, home, and energy data
- Constraints from insurance regulation, underwriting fairness, data accuracy, and operational support
- How the feature fits within Tesla’s broader goals around safety, energy resilience, and integrated ownership
The goal is to define a compelling product experience that is valuable to customers, feasible for Tesla to deliver, and meaningfully differentiated from conventional insurance offerings while clearly articulating user needs, trade-offs, and success criteria.
