Improve onboarding in Supercharger for fleet operators

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.

Tesla wants to improve the onboarding experience for fleet operators who need to use the Supercharger network for commercial electric vehicle operations. These operators may manage delivery vans, rideshare vehicles, rental fleets, corporate vehicles, or autonomous/connected vehicle fleets, and their needs differ from an individual Tesla driver charging a personal car.

Today, onboarding a fleet may involve multiple stakeholders: a fleet owner or operations manager, drivers, finance teams, charging coordinators, and potentially vehicle procurement or software administrators. The experience must help them understand whether Supercharging fits their routes, costs, utilization patterns, account setup, driver access, billing, reporting, and operational reliability requirements.

In this product design interview, focus on the end-to-end onboarding journey for fleet operators adopting Supercharger access. Consider the unique constraints of commercial charging: predictable uptime, scalable account management, fast driver enablement, cost visibility, location planning, integration with fleet tools, and minimal operational disruption.

The experience should consider:

- Who the primary fleet operator users are, including decision-makers, admins, dispatchers, and drivers

- The current onboarding workflow from discovery and eligibility through account setup, vehicle enrollment, driver access, and first successful charging session

- Key pain points such as unclear pricing, charger availability, route fit, reimbursement, billing consolidation, driver permissions, and support escalation

- What information fleet operators need before committing to Supercharger usage at scale

- How the product should support fleets with many vehicles, multiple depots, varied driver roles, and changing schedules

- How Tesla’s connected vehicle, charging, energy, and software ecosystem could shape the onboarding experience

- What trust, safety, reliability, and operational-readiness signals are important for commercial users

- How success could be evaluated without jumping directly to a specific solution

Your goal is to define a clear product experience that reduces friction for fleet operators adopting Supercharger, supports their commercial operating needs, and helps Tesla scale Supercharger usage beyond individual drivers while maintaining a reliable charging experience.
