Problem Statement Description
Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.
Tesla’s Charging Network is a critical part of the broader energy and mobility ecosystem, helping EV customers confidently plan, access, and complete charging sessions. For this question, focus on designing a new customer-facing feature that improves outcomes for energy customers who depend on charging availability, cost predictability, speed, reliability, and integration with their vehicle or energy usage needs.
Consider the end-to-end workflow: a customer realizes they need to charge, searches or is routed to a station, evaluates charger availability and pricing, arrives on-site, waits if needed, starts a session, monitors progress, pays, and continues their trip or daily routine. Friction may occur when chargers are occupied, charging speed differs from expectations, pricing is unclear, stations are inconvenient, or the customer cannot optimize charging around time, cost, battery health, or energy preferences.
Your scope should be a product design proposal for one meaningful feature within the Charging Network experience. The feature may serve individual EV drivers, frequent commuters, road-trippers, fleet users, or site-based energy customers, but you should clearly define the primary user and the specific outcome you are improving.
The experience should consider:
- The target customer segment and their most important charging jobs-to-be-done
- Current workflow pain points before, during, and after a charging session
- How the feature fits into Tesla’s vehicle, app, navigation, payments, and energy ecosystem
- Constraints such as charger availability, station capacity, battery state, pricing, grid load, and safety
- What information customers need to make confident charging decisions
- Edge cases such as busy stations, failed chargers, range anxiety, non-Tesla access, or fleet scheduling
- How success would be measured through customer, network, and business outcomes
The goal is to define a clear customer problem, design a feature that improves the charging experience, explain how users would interact with it, and articulate why it creates value for both energy customers and Tesla’s Charging Network.
