Redesign the mobile experience of Tesla App for first-time EV owners

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.

Tesla’s mobile app is a central part of the ownership experience, spanning vehicle access, charging, climate control, software updates, service, safety alerts, and the broader Tesla energy ecosystem. For first-time EV owners, the app is often their first day-to-day interface with both the car and a new set of behaviors: planning range, understanding charging, managing software-driven features, and building trust in a connected vehicle.

Redesign the Tesla App experience specifically for someone who has just taken delivery of their first electric vehicle. Focus on the early ownership journey, where users may be excited but also uncertain about charging etiquette, range anxiety, vehicle controls, mobile key setup, home charging, public charging, maintenance expectations, safety features, and how app actions map to the physical car.

Your design should account for Tesla’s strengths in hardware-software integration, direct ownership relationship, over-the-air updates, charging infrastructure, and connected services. It should also recognize that first-time EV owners may compare the experience with traditional car ownership, dealership-based support, third-party charging apps, and competing EV ecosystems.

The experience should consider:

- The first 30–90 days of ownership, including setup, onboarding, daily use, and moments of confusion or anxiety.

- Core workflows such as mobile key setup, charging at home and on the road, range planning, climate control, service requests, alerts, and software updates.

- Different user contexts, including commuters, apartment dwellers, road-trippers, families sharing a vehicle, and users without prior EV knowledge.

- How the app helps users build confidence without overwhelming them with technical detail or excessive education.

- Safety, trust, and reliability expectations when the phone becomes a key control surface for the vehicle.

- Integration with Tesla’s broader ecosystem, such as Supercharging, energy products, autonomy-related features, and in-car software.

- Accessibility, clarity, and support for high-stakes moments like low battery, failed charging, vehicle lockout, or urgent service needs.

- How the redesigned experience could evolve as the owner becomes more experienced over time.

The goal is to define a mobile experience that makes first-time EV ownership feel intuitive, safe, and confidence-building while preserving the speed, intelligence, and connected-product advantages expected from Tesla.
