Problem Statement Description
Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.
Tesla wants to improve the end-to-end Model 3 experience for EV buyers. This is a product design question focused on how prospective and new owners discover, evaluate, purchase, receive, learn, charge, drive, and continue using a Model 3 in a market where EV expectations are shaped by lower-cost competitors, legacy automakers, charging networks, connected services, and autonomy promises.
Assume the target users include first-time EV buyers, buyers switching from gasoline cars, and cost-conscious customers comparing Model 3 against alternatives from BYD, Ford, GM, Rivian, and other mobility options. Their experience may involve uncertainty around range, charging access, total cost of ownership, financing, delivery timelines, software features, safety, service, insurance, and long-term battery performance.
Your task is to frame the user journey, identify the highest-friction moments, and design a better Model 3 experience that fits Tesla’s strengths in hardware-software integration, charging, safety, manufacturing scale, energy ecosystem, and connected vehicle services. The scope can include digital purchase flows, in-car experience, mobile app, charging, onboarding, ownership support, or pre-purchase education, but should be clearly bounded.
The experience should consider:
- Key EV buyer segments and how their needs differ by experience level, commute pattern, home charging access, geography, budget, and family use case.
- The full workflow from awareness and comparison through configuration, financing, delivery, onboarding, daily driving, charging, maintenance, and upgrades.
- Pain points around range anxiety, charging reliability, price transparency, feature complexity, delivery coordination, service availability, and trust in autonomous or software-based capabilities.
- How Tesla’s app, vehicle interface, website, charging network, service operations, and energy products could work together as one coherent experience.
- Constraints such as vehicle hardware limitations, charging infrastructure availability, regulatory requirements, safety expectations, manufacturing simplicity, and support capacity.
- Success metrics that could indicate a better buyer and owner experience, such as conversion, delivery completion, activation, charging satisfaction, support contact rate, retention, referrals, or feature adoption.
- Trade-offs between simplifying the purchase journey, increasing personalization, preserving Tesla’s direct-sales model, controlling operational cost, and differentiating Model 3 in a crowded EV market.
The goal is to propose a focused product experience improvement for Model 3 buyers, grounded in a clear user problem and Tesla’s strategic advantages, while showing how the design would reduce friction, build confidence in EV ownership, and create measurable value for both customers and the business.
