Improve onboarding in Office 365 for developers

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Microsoft is a productivity, software, AI, gaming, and cloud company; its products include Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn, Xbox, Azure, Dynamics, and Copilot.

Design an improved onboarding experience for developers building on Office 365. The focus is on helping developers go from initial intent—such as integrating with Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, or Microsoft Graph—to a working, compliant, production-ready application with less confusion and fewer dead ends.

Assume the users include independent developers, enterprise developers, IT-admin-adjacent builders, and software teams evaluating Office 365 as a platform. Their current workflow may involve discovering relevant APIs, creating or accessing a tenant, registering an app, configuring authentication, requesting permissions, finding sample code, testing with realistic data, and understanding security, compliance, and publishing requirements.

This is a product design question, so the emphasis is not on proposing a single feature immediately. First clarify the developer journey, identify the highest-friction moments, define which developer segment and use case you are optimizing for, and then design an experience that fits Microsoft’s enterprise trust, productivity, and platform ecosystem context.

The experience should consider:

- The developer’s starting point: new to Microsoft, familiar with Azure, enterprise employee, ISV, or hobbyist evaluator.

- Key onboarding steps across discovery, account/tenant setup, app registration, API permissions, authentication, testing, and production readiness.

- Friction caused by fragmented documentation, unclear prerequisites, admin consent, sandbox limitations, security policies, or confusing platform terminology.

- How developers understand what is possible across Office 365 workloads and choose the right APIs or integration path.

- How the experience supports both quick experimentation and enterprise-grade compliance expectations.

- Dependencies on admins, security teams, tenant configuration, and organizational policies.

- Signals that onboarding is successful, such as time to first working integration, completion of app setup, successful API calls, and developer retention.

Your goal is to frame the problem clearly, select the most important developer persona and onboarding scenario, and describe a product experience that helps developers confidently build with Office 365 while respecting Microsoft’s enterprise, security, and ecosystem constraints.
