Redesign the mobile experience of Azure for IT leaders

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Microsoft is a productivity, software, AI, gaming, and cloud company; its products include Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn, Xbox, Azure, Dynamics, and Copilot. Azure is Microsoft's cloud platform; its products include compute, storage, databases, networking, identity, AI services, analytics, and developer tools.

Microsoft Azure is a mission-critical platform for organizations running cloud infrastructure, applications, data services, security tooling, and AI workloads. IT leaders such as CIOs, VPs of Infrastructure, Heads of Cloud Operations, and Security/Platform leaders are accountable for uptime, cost, compliance, incident response, and executive visibility, but much of their day happens away from a desktop: in meetings, during escalations, while traveling, or when responding after hours.

The current mobile experience should be evaluated through the lens of what an IT leader actually needs to understand and act on quickly, not as a smaller version of the full Azure portal. The redesign should focus on high-value mobile workflows such as monitoring business-critical services, reviewing alerts, understanding cost or usage spikes, approving operational actions, communicating with teams, and getting executive-level summaries without overwhelming detail.

This is a product design question, so the emphasis is on identifying the right users, their contexts, pain points, priorities, and constraints, then defining a mobile experience that supports fast, trusted decision-making. Consider the enterprise expectations Microsoft must meet around security, compliance, role-based access, reliability, and integration with existing Microsoft and Azure workflows.

The experience should consider:

- The primary IT leader personas and how their needs differ from cloud engineers, developers, finance teams, and security operators

- Mobile-specific situations where Azure access is valuable, such as executive meetings, incident escalations, budget reviews, travel, or after-hours alerts

- The most important information hierarchy for a small screen, including status, risk, cost, service health, security posture, and recommended next steps

- Friction in the current workflow, including alert fatigue, too much technical detail, slow navigation, unclear ownership, and difficulty taking safe action on mobile

- Enterprise controls such as authentication, role-based permissions, audit trails, approval workflows, and prevention of accidental high-risk changes

- Integration opportunities with Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Entra ID, Defender, Azure Monitor, Cost Management, and support workflows

- How the product should balance executive visibility with actionable operational depth

- Accessibility, reliability, offline or low-connectivity behavior, and trust in the accuracy and timeliness of displayed data

The goal is to define a redesigned Azure mobile experience that helps IT leaders quickly understand the health, cost, risk, and priority actions across their cloud environment, while supporting confident decision-making in moments when desktop access is impractical.
