Improve onboarding in Podcasts for podcast fans

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Spotify is an audio streaming company; its products include music, podcasts, audiobooks, playlists, recommendations, creator tools, subscriptions, and ads.

Spotify wants to improve the onboarding experience for podcast fans—users who already listen to podcasts or are highly likely to become regular podcast listeners. The focus is the early experience when a user first engages with Podcasts inside Spotify, whether they are new to Spotify, returning after using other podcast apps, or existing music listeners exploring podcasts more seriously.

Podcast fans often arrive with specific expectations: finding favorite shows, importing or recreating listening habits, discovering new episodes, managing subscriptions or follows, continuing long-form listening across devices, and feeling confident that Spotify understands their tastes. The onboarding experience should reduce friction between intent and habitual listening while fitting naturally into Spotify’s broader audio ecosystem.

This is a product design interview question. You should frame the user, their current workflow, key pain points, and the product experience Spotify would need to support without jumping directly into features. Consider how onboarding differs for casual podcast discovery versus dedicated podcast consumption, and how Spotify’s strengths in personalization, discovery, creators, and cross-format audio might shape the experience.

The experience should consider:

- Who the primary “podcast fan” segments are and how their needs differ from music-first Spotify users

- The current user journey from first podcast intent to repeated listening behavior

- Friction around finding known shows, discovering relevant new content, managing follows, and resuming episodes

- How personalization signals could be collected or inferred during onboarding without creating unnecessary effort

- How onboarding should balance podcasts with Spotify’s existing music, audiobooks, and recommendation surfaces

- Trust, relevance, and control in recommendations, notifications, and content preferences

- Competitive expectations set by dedicated podcast apps, video-led discovery platforms, and broader audio services

- Success indicators such as activation, first follow, first completed episode, repeat listening, and retention

Your goal is to define a clear, user-centered product problem and design scope for improving podcast onboarding on Spotify, showing how the experience could help podcast fans quickly feel oriented, understood, and motivated to keep listening.
