Problem Statement Description
Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.
Tesla wants to improve the mobile app experience for people who are owning an electric vehicle for the first time. These users may be excited about the Tesla ecosystem but unfamiliar with EV-specific behaviors such as charging, range management, preconditioning, home setup, service scheduling, software updates, and app-based vehicle controls.
In this product design question, focus on the early ownership journey: from delivery day through the first few weeks of daily use. The Tesla App is often the primary interface for onboarding, controlling the car, understanding battery and charging behavior, managing vehicle settings, and accessing support. Your task is to rethink how the app can reduce confusion, build confidence, and help new owners form the right habits without overwhelming them.
Consider the broader Tesla context: tight hardware-software integration, safety-critical vehicle interactions, connected services, charging infrastructure, energy products, and a user base that may range from tech-savvy enthusiasts to mainstream buyers switching from gas vehicles for the first time.
The experience should consider:
- The key moments in a first-time EV owner’s workflow, including delivery, first drive, first charge, first long trip, service needs, and software updates
- User anxieties around range, charging availability, battery health, safety, and unfamiliar controls
- How the app should balance education, guidance, automation, and direct control
- Differences between home charging, public Supercharging, and third-party charging scenarios
- How to support users before problems occur, not only after they seek help
- What information should be personalized based on vehicle model, location, charging setup, and user behavior
- How to make the experience feel simple while still supporting advanced Tesla capabilities over time
The goal is to define a redesigned mobile experience that helps first-time EV owners become confident, safe, and self-sufficient Tesla users, while staying consistent with Tesla’s connected vehicle ecosystem and premium product expectations.
