Design a better Instagram experience for creators

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads. Instagram is Meta's visual social app; its products include Feed, Stories, Reels, DMs, creator tools, shopping surfaces, recommendations, and ads.

Instagram is a core platform for creators to build an audience, express themselves, engage fans, and potentially earn income through brand partnerships, platform monetization, shopping, subscriptions, or cross-platform opportunities. Creators range from aspiring hobbyists to full-time professionals, and their needs often differ from casual consumers: they care about reach, consistency, audience understanding, content creation tools, community management, safety, and monetization.

You are asked to design a better Instagram experience specifically for creators. Focus on the end-to-end creator workflow: deciding what to make, producing and publishing content, reaching the right audience, understanding performance, interacting with followers, managing identity and wellbeing, and growing a sustainable creator presence on Instagram.

This is a product design question, so the emphasis is not on proposing a generic feature list. The expected scope is to identify a meaningful creator segment, understand their key pain points, prioritize the most important user problem, and design an experience that fits Instagram’s social graph, content formats, discovery surfaces, monetization goals, and safety responsibilities.

The experience should consider:

- Which creator segment you are designing for, such as emerging creators, professional influencers, educators, artists, small business creators, or niche community builders

- The creator journey across content planning, creation, publishing, distribution, engagement, analytics, and monetization

- Friction in current creator workflows, including discoverability, unclear performance signals, burnout, content management, audience engagement, or monetization uncertainty

- How the proposed experience fits into Instagram surfaces such as Reels, Stories, Feed, Live, DMs, Profiles, Insights, and creator tools

- Trade-offs between creator growth, viewer experience, content quality, platform safety, and ad or monetization incentives

- How Instagram can differentiate from competing creator platforms while leveraging its social graph and network effects

- Trust and safety needs, including harassment, spam, impersonation, content policy clarity, and creator wellbeing

- Success indicators that would help determine whether the redesigned experience improves creator outcomes without harming the broader Instagram ecosystem

Your goal is to define a clear creator problem and design a cohesive Instagram experience that helps creators succeed, while balancing user value, business impact, platform health, and feasibility at Meta scale.
