Problem Statement Description
Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads. WhatsApp is Meta's messaging platform; its products include private chats, groups, calls, communities, channels, business messaging, payments in some markets, and status updates.
You are redesigning the mobile WhatsApp experience for families. Focus on how family members use WhatsApp today to coordinate daily life, stay emotionally connected, share media, manage group conversations, and support relatives across different ages, locations, languages, and levels of digital comfort.
Families often rely on WhatsApp as a default communication layer, but their workflows can become messy: important messages get buried in busy groups, planning happens across scattered chats, photos and documents are hard to retrieve, and privacy expectations vary between parents, children, grandparents, and extended relatives. The redesign should preserve WhatsApp’s simplicity, trust, and network effects while improving the experience for family-specific use cases.
This is a product design exercise, so define the target family users clearly, identify their highest-friction moments, and propose what the mobile product experience must support. Consider both frequent everyday interactions and emotionally meaningful moments, while staying mindful of safety, privacy, accessibility, and the lightweight nature of messaging.
The experience should consider:
- Core family workflows such as coordination, reminders, media sharing, caregiving, event planning, and staying in touch across distance
- Different user roles, including parents, children, grandparents, caregivers, and extended family members
- Pain points in existing group chats, message discovery, notification overload, and mixed personal versus family communication
- Privacy and consent expectations, especially around children, shared media, location, and sensitive family information
- Mobile-first interaction patterns that work for low-attention, high-frequency use
- Accessibility for older adults, multilingual families, and users with varying technical familiarity
- Safety at scale, including abuse prevention, misinformation, unwanted forwarding, and group control
- How the redesign fits within WhatsApp’s existing trust model, social graph, and simple messaging experience
Your goal is to frame a clear family-centered product opportunity, explain the user needs and trade-offs, and outline a redesigned mobile experience that makes WhatsApp more useful and reliable for family life without making the product feel heavy or unfamiliar.
