Redesign the mobile experience of WhatsApp for families

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads. WhatsApp is Meta's messaging platform; its products include private chats, groups, calls, communities, channels, business messaging, payments in some markets, and status updates.

WhatsApp is already a core communication tool for many families, spanning everyday coordination, emotional connection, caregiving, celebrations, travel planning, and multi-generational group chats. However, the mobile experience can become noisy, fragmented, and hard to manage when family members have different levels of tech comfort, privacy expectations, languages, availability, and urgency.

Redesign the mobile WhatsApp experience specifically for families. Consider how parents, children, grandparents, siblings, extended relatives, and caregivers use WhatsApp across one-to-one chats, family groups, media sharing, voice notes, calls, status updates, and coordination around real-world tasks. The focus is not on creating a separate app, but on improving the family-oriented experience within WhatsApp’s mobile product while respecting its simplicity, trust, privacy, and global scale.

Your response should define the target family users, identify the most important pain points in their current workflows, and propose a product experience that helps families communicate, coordinate, and feel connected more effectively. Be clear about the problem you are prioritizing, the user journey you are improving, and the trade-offs involved in changing a widely used messaging product.

The experience should consider:

- Different family structures, including nuclear families, extended families, long-distance families, co-parents, and caregiving networks

- Common workflows such as planning events, sharing photos, checking in, managing urgent messages, making group decisions, and preserving important information

- Friction caused by noisy group chats, missed context, repeated questions, buried media, unclear responsibilities, and varying digital literacy

- Privacy and safety expectations across adults, minors, elders, and family members with different comfort levels

- How the design fits into WhatsApp’s existing mobile patterns for chats, groups, calls, media, communities, and notifications

- Accessibility, language, low-bandwidth usage, and device constraints in global family contexts

- Adoption challenges, including avoiding complexity, preserving trust, and ensuring the experience feels natural rather than intrusive

The goal is to evaluate how you frame a broad family communication problem, prioritize a meaningful user segment and use case, and design a mobile WhatsApp experience that creates clear value for families while remaining simple, private, and scalable.
