QuestionsProduct DesignMeta

Design a better Instagram experience for creators

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads. Instagram is Meta's visual social app; its products include Feed, Stories, Reels, DMs, creator tools, shopping surfaces, recommendations, and ads.

Instagram is a major distribution, engagement, and monetization platform for creators, but creators often face friction across the full workflow: deciding what to make, publishing across formats, reaching the right audience, understanding performance, engaging with followers, managing brand or fan relationships, and staying safe from burnout, harassment, or platform uncertainty.

For this product design question, focus on improving the Instagram experience for creators as a distinct user segment. “Creators” may include emerging creators trying to grow, full-time professional creators, niche community builders, educators, entertainers, small-business creators, or public figures. You should clarify which creator segment and use case you are designing for, rather than trying to solve every creator problem at once.

Your response should explore creator motivations and pain points within Instagram’s ecosystem, while accounting for Meta’s strengths in social graph, discovery, messaging, ads, monetization, and safety at scale. Consider how the experience fits into existing Instagram surfaces such as Reels, Stories, Feed, Live, DMs, profiles, insights, and creator tools.

The experience should consider:

- The creator workflow from content planning and creation to publishing, distribution, engagement, measurement, and monetization.

- Differences between new, growing, and established creators, including how their goals and constraints vary.

- Key pain points such as discoverability, algorithm uncertainty, content fatigue, audience engagement, monetization access, analytics clarity, and safety.

- How creators interact with fans, collaborators, brands, communities, and other creators on Instagram.

- Trade-offs between creator growth, follower experience, platform integrity, ad value, and content quality.

- How the product could support both short-term creator outcomes and long-term trust in the platform.

- Success signals that would indicate the experience is meaningfully better for creators without harming user experience or ecosystem health.

The goal is to frame a clear creator problem, identify the most important user needs, and design a focused Instagram experience that improves creator outcomes while strengthening the broader Instagram ecosystem.
