Design a better Rides experience for riders

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Uber is a mobility and delivery platform; its products include rides, Uber Eats, grocery and retail delivery, freight, driver and courier tools, and marketplace pricing.

Uber’s Rides experience helps riders get from one place to another across many trip contexts: commuting, airport travel, nightlife, errands, appointments, and unfamiliar-city travel. Riders may be opening the app under time pressure, in bad weather, with safety concerns, with limited local knowledge, or while comparing price and wait time against alternatives such as transit, taxis, or competing ride-hailing apps.

Design a better Rides experience for riders. Focus on the end-to-end rider journey: deciding to request a ride, entering destination and pickup details, choosing a ride option, waiting for the driver, completing pickup, tracking the trip, handling changes or issues, and finishing the ride. Consider both frequent and occasional riders, as well as differences across cities, trip types, device conditions, accessibility needs, and trust expectations.

Your scope is the rider-facing product experience, not driver-side optimization or marketplace pricing strategy in isolation. You may assume Uber already has an active marketplace of riders and drivers, but the experience must respect core constraints such as safety, reliability, marketplace liquidity, local regulations, driver-rider coordination, and unit economics.

The experience should consider:

- Key rider segments and the specific ride occasions or pain points you are prioritizing

- Friction in destination entry, pickup selection, ride-option comparison, pricing clarity, and ETA confidence

- Anxiety points around safety, driver matching, pickup confusion, cancellations, delays, and route uncertainty

- Differences between routine trips and high-stakes trips such as airport rides, late-night rides, or time-sensitive appointments

- How the experience should adapt across geographies, languages, payment norms, accessibility needs, and connectivity conditions

- Trust-building information riders need before, during, and after the trip

- Trade-offs between simplicity, rider control, operational feasibility, and marketplace efficiency

- How you would evaluate whether the redesigned experience improves rider outcomes without harming reliability or economics

The goal is to define a clear rider problem, identify the most important workflow frictions, and propose a product experience that makes requesting and completing an Uber ride easier, safer, more reliable, and more confidence-inspiring for the target riders you choose.
