Design a better Rides experience for riders

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Uber is a mobility and delivery platform; its products include rides, Uber Eats, grocery and retail delivery, freight, driver and courier tools, and marketplace pricing.

Uber’s Rides product serves riders across many trip types: commuting, airport travel, nights out, errands, business travel, family logistics, and urgent point-to-point transportation. Riders expect the experience to feel fast, predictable, safe, fairly priced, and easy to recover from when something goes wrong. In this interview, you are asked to design a better Rides experience for riders, with Uber’s marketplace context in mind.

Focus on the end-to-end rider journey: deciding to request a ride, entering destination and pickup details, comparing ride options, waiting for the driver, meeting at pickup, taking the trip, completing payment, and resolving post-trip issues. Consider how rider needs may differ by geography, trip urgency, accessibility needs, price sensitivity, trust and safety expectations, and familiarity with Uber.

This is a product design question, so the emphasis is on identifying meaningful user pain points, prioritizing which rider segment or journey moment to improve, and defining an experience that fits within a two-sided mobility marketplace. Your proposal should consider driver supply, ETA reliability, pricing transparency, safety, support, and operational feasibility without assuming unlimited resources.

The experience should consider:

- Which rider segment, trip type, or journey stage you are optimizing for, and why it matters

- Current frictions riders may face around pickup accuracy, wait time, cancellation, price confidence, safety, or support

- How the rider discovers, understands, and uses the improved experience in the Uber app

- What information needs to be shown before, during, and after the ride to reduce uncertainty

- How the design balances rider convenience with driver experience and marketplace liquidity

- Edge cases such as airport pickups, crowded venues, low-connectivity areas, accessibility needs, shared accounts, or unfamiliar cities

- Trust, safety, privacy, and reliability expectations across different markets

- How you would measure whether the redesigned experience improves rider outcomes without harming marketplace health

Your goal is to frame a clear rider problem, choose a focused design direction, and describe a product experience that makes Uber Rides more useful, reliable, and trustworthy for riders while remaining practical for a global mobility marketplace.
