Problem Statement Description
You are designing improvements to the first-week experience in a team collaboration product for power users—people who already collaborate heavily, manage multiple projects or channels, coordinate with many teammates, and expect advanced workflows to work quickly. These users may be joining a new workspace, migrating from another tool, being added to a fast-moving project, or setting up collaboration norms for a team.
The current challenge is not basic onboarding alone. Power users often need to understand where important work lives, who owns what, how conversations connect to files and decisions, which notifications matter, and how to configure the product without slowing down their team. If the first week feels noisy, fragmented, repetitive, or hard to customize, even capable users may disengage or revert to existing tools.
Your task is to frame a product design approach that improves this first-week collaboration experience and supports stronger retention. Focus on the workflows, pain points, user needs, and product experience that would help power users become effective quickly while also fitting into team-wide collaboration patterns.
The experience should consider:
- The key power-user personas, such as project leads, functional managers, technical leads, operations coordinators, or highly active individual contributors
- First-week workflows, including workspace setup, team discovery, project/channel joining, file or context review, notification tuning, and task handoffs
- Friction points around information overload, unclear ownership, duplicated conversations, poor discoverability, and switching between tools
- How the product should support both individual productivity and team-level collaboration norms
- Differences between a new team starting fresh and an experienced team migrating from another collaboration system
- Signals that indicate a power user is becoming activated, retained, or at risk of dropping off
- Constraints such as enterprise permissions, privacy, accessibility, cross-platform use, and avoiding disruption to existing team workflows
The goal is to define a thoughtful product experience that helps power users become confident, connected, and productive within their first week, while improving the likelihood that they continue using the collaboration product as a core part of their team’s workflow.
