Design a better AirCover experience for first-time guests at global scale

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.

Airbnb wants to improve the AirCover experience for guests who are booking or taking their first Airbnb trip. These users may be familiar with hotels or online travel agencies, but they often have lower trust in peer-to-peer stays, less understanding of what is protected, and higher anxiety around listing accuracy, host reliability, check-in, safety, cancellations, and getting help if something goes wrong.

Your task is to design a better product experience for AirCover at global scale. Focus on how first-time guests discover, understand, trust, and use AirCover across the journey: search, listing evaluation, booking, pre-trip preparation, check-in, the stay itself, issue reporting, resolution, and post-trip follow-up. The experience should account for Airbnb’s two-sided marketplace, where guest confidence must be improved without creating unnecessary burden, risk, or distrust for hosts.

This is a product design question, so clarify the target user, identify the highest-friction moments, define the core user needs, and propose a product experience that makes AirCover more understandable, actionable, and reassuring for first-time guests across countries, languages, policies, and travel contexts.

The experience should consider:

- First-time guest mental models, fears, and expectations compared with hotels or other travel platforms

- When and where AirCover should be explained without overwhelming the booking flow

- How guests understand coverage, limitations, eligibility, and next steps during stressful moments

- How issue reporting, evidence submission, support routing, and resolution status should work

- Global differences in language, regulation, payment methods, connectivity, safety norms, and customer support availability

- Marketplace trust trade-offs between guest protection, host fairness, fraud prevention, and operational cost

- Edge cases such as last-minute cancellations, inaccurate listings, inaccessible check-in, safety concerns, and urgent rebooking needs

- Success signals that indicate first-time guests feel safer, complete bookings, and are able to resolve problems effectively

The goal is to frame and design an AirCover experience that increases trust and confidence for first-time Airbnb guests while preserving marketplace quality and host supply health at global scale.
