Problem Statement Description
Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.
Airbnb Experiences depends on high-quality hosts who can create, list, and operate memorable activities for travelers across many countries, languages, regulations, and cultural contexts. In this question, you are designing improvements to the onboarding journey for prospective and new Experiences hosts at global scale, from the moment they consider hosting through the point where they are ready to accept guests and deliver their first experience.
Focus on the host-side workflow and the friction that prevents qualified hosts from successfully launching. Hosts may include individuals, guides, creators, chefs, instructors, or small operators with different levels of digital comfort, business maturity, local compliance knowledge, and trust in the platform. The onboarding experience must balance growth in supply with Airbnb’s expectations around trust, safety, marketplace quality, guest experience, and operational scalability.
You should treat this as a product design problem, not just a signup funnel optimization. Consider how hosts understand what makes a strong Experience, prepare required information, meet quality and safety expectations, navigate review or approval steps, localize their offering for travelers, and gain confidence before going live.
The experience should consider:
- The key host segments and how their onboarding needs differ by geography, category, experience type, and familiarity with Airbnb.
- The end-to-end onboarding journey, including discovery, eligibility, listing creation, quality guidance, verification, review, readiness, and first-launch support.
- Points where hosts may drop off, become confused, submit low-quality listings, or require manual support.
- Global scale constraints such as localization, regulations, safety standards, payments, identity verification, language, cultural nuance, and regional supply gaps.
- How to maintain marketplace trust and experience quality while reducing unnecessary friction for legitimate hosts.
- What information, education, feedback, or confidence-building moments the product experience must support.
- How the design could adapt for both new hosts and existing Airbnb hosts expanding into Experiences.
- The trade-offs between automation, human review, operational cost, speed to launch, and risk control.
The goal is to frame a clear product opportunity and design a host onboarding experience that helps more qualified Experiences hosts successfully launch while protecting guest trust, Airbnb’s brand, and marketplace quality across global markets.
